The Comparison Chart… *Update* September 14th, 2008

Well folks.. we are almost there… I just have a few things to work out and then the chart will be ready to go. In case you are interested, please go here: www.damroundup.com/chart to check it out. As you can see, if you click on the individual fields in the chart, the information at the bottom of the screen updates to reflect the changes… I just have some sample data in there now to ensure it is working ok. For example, if you click on Idimager and the installation box, you’ll see some installation notes appear in the details box below.

I’m excited about the potential for the chart and how I’m able to control all the data updates via XML thanks to the Flex 3 code I am using. Learning as I go… but it is fun! Please let me know what you think.. and what you might want in addition to what you see there.

Thx!

    Hey Andy,

It looks like you gotten busy doing some other things ;>

Do you have a schedule for future updates? Can I suggest a product to review? If so, have a look at Expression Media2 (the old iView MediaPro). I’m demo-ing it now and am liking what I see. There seem to be some technical issues held over from iView (1.6 gb catalog limit being the biggest) but v2 seems to be a useful upgrade from v1.

    Take care and happty Thanksgiving!

    Chris

    Just found this site.
Being in the market for a new DAM system, and researching for friends at the same time, the information in here is invaluable! Link will be forwarded. :-)
In my search I have already come across some other products that may be of interest to you. Expression Media has been mentioned. I also recommend that you have a look at ThumbsPlus from http://www.cerious.com which is a heads-on competitor to IDimager. BreezeBrowser is another product, and so is the ULead Photo Explorer. Adobe has implemented some DAM features in Photoshop Elements as well as in Lightroom, and I know I can’t get around those products when explaining DAM to my friends.
Considering the versioning features of IDimager, the only real rivals are among full-fledged document management systems intended for workgroups. To my knowledge, only the Version Cue that comes with the Creative Suite packages from Adobe are directly relevant for photographers.

    Best,
    Jostein Øksne

Thank you Alun and a hearty welcome to you! I appreciate your kind words and would appreciate you referring others to the site - it has grown tremendously in a small amount of time - DAM info is on everyone’s mind.

I am already about 3/4 way done with my EM review so that should be posted soon.

As for Thumbsplus… well - I’ve used the product for years. In fact, it is still used in the family to keyword and search for photos. The main problem I have with it… the development team and support is basically non-existent. The program hasn’t been updated in many years so things like XMP support, light table, scripting and a downloader feature are missing. Things like IPTC editor is severely lacking as well. But - there are some great things about it as well… It is fast! They are working on a new version … but it is taking them a really long time to deliver on new versions of the Beta - and in typical cerious fashion, the communication is not there.

I will probably put up a review of it soon anyway since v8.0 might take a long time to appear.

Lightroom has come a long way since v1.0… but the DAM part of the tool is still basic in nature. It also tends to be a bit clunky and slow… Bridge is probably a better choice at this point but since it is not a catalog - you can’t do many of the things you’d want to.

Idimager continues to improve by leaps and bounds.. and of course, I cannot stress the importance of having a great forum with an excellent community and developer willing to help instantly. In my opinion, it still remains the best overall DAM product on the market.. and getting better by the day!

Thanks again for your thoughts… I’ll be putting up some new stuff real soon… I really mean it this time! :)

Hi Chris - I hear ya.. :) I’ve been so incredibly busy with my book publishing business, I just haven’t had time to do the reviews the justice they deserve. I will try and post a few new reviews as I know they are well received by folks around the world…

Once again, I am looking for anyone that would like to contribute to the site with their own detailed reviews - if anyone has interest, just shoot me an email or post a comment and I’ll be in touch!

Thx for visiting Chris.. most appreciated!
